Improve Reading´s Open Spaces and Rivers

15/2/2010

Look out for open spaces and rivers that need a RESCUE from litter and get in touch with RESCUE

The countdown has started to this year´s RESCUE event — Reading´s Rivers and Environmental Spaces Clean Up Event - which will be taking place in Reading over the weekend of 13/14 March.

This year people won´t just be litter picking but also hedge and tree planting, greening up Reading.

Local people are being urged to join a community group near them or initiate their own litter picking or tree planting event during the weekend.

Volunteers can take part by:

1) finding some friends who want to help

2) finding a litter hotspot to tidy up or open space to plant a tree

3) getting in touch with RESCUE to

register their event and order equipment.
  • Find out about a group near them
  • Express an interest in hedge and tree planting

Please register by Monday 8th of February.

If you still want to take part after the deadline, you may be asked to join a registered group near you.

Last year 35 sites around Reading were cleared up by 464 RESCUE volunteers who filled nine skips and 510 bags.  Organisers then pick up rubbish collected by volunteers and have been taking steps to sort and recycle it if they can.

The annual event, which has been running for 21 years, is organised by Reading Borough Council and for the third year, is being sponsored by Thames Water.

Staff from Thames Water, along with businesses around the borough, will be carrying out their own clear up events in the week leading up to RESCUE weekend.

It's RESCUE's 21st birthday and we will be celebrating on 18th March with ‘RESCUE RECOVERY´ an informal event with awards and a celebration for everyone who has participated in the event, organised by Reading 107FM and Kyocera.

Listen out for RESCUE on the Radio in February and March.
