Energy from Waste

From 2010, re3 will be diverting 60,000 tonnes of waste per year away from landfill sites, by sending it to an Energy from Waste facility.

re3 have a partnership with an Energy from Waste facility in Slough, where waste will be burnt to produce heat and electricity.  Waste can be seen as a source of renewable energy and the EfW facility produces 37MW of electricity, which is enough to power 50,000 homes.

Energy from Waste is monitored closely by the Environment Agency and emissions to air are very tightly regulated.  In fact a typical 15 minute firework display produces more pollution than 100 years of operating an Energy from Waste facility.

The by-products of the Energy from Waste process typically include bottom ash which can be used in the aggregates industry, and metals which are extracted and sent for recycling.
